Tasmania's population closing in on 500,000

TASMANIA'S population has reached a record high and is expected to hit the half million mark soon.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures out yesterday show Tasmania's population for the March quarter rose by 1540 people to 497,312.
Treasurer Michael Aird yesterday said the turnaround in the state's economy and strong employment prospects are encouraging people to stay here and also attracting new people to the state.
Migrants accounted for more than half of Australia's net population increase in the March quarter.
