Dust storm blasts city

STAFF REPORTERS
January 22, 2009 02:31pm

A BUS has been hit by a tree, roads have been closed and power cut in Hobart as gale-force winds caused chaos today.

The bus driver was injured when a large tree fell on to the bus in Macquarie St about 11.30am

Wild winds uprooted the tree, near Dunn Place, and it fell across the front of the bus.

It is not known if there were passengers on the bus, but the driver was taken to hospital and was believed to have leg injuries.
Roads closed
Police have advised that the Midland Highway is now closed between Campbell Town and Powranna (near
Perth) because of a fire burning in forest close to the highway.
Also the Esk Main Rd  to St Marys is closed 2km east of Conara because Smoke from
a bushfire is making conditions hazardous.

The Midland Hwy is closed until further notice.  The fire is burning close to the highway and more than 20 powerpoles have been burnt down.
Bellerive Beach is closed because of the danger of flying roof sheets.
Earlier, the wind flipped a caravan on the Midland Hwy at Tunbridge.

Police say motorists should expect delays across the state because there are many power lines down and trees across roads. A large tree has cut the road and brought down powerlines at Roslyn Ave in Blackmans Bay.
Police advise people to remain indoors because of flying debris, and avoid driving if possible.
Gusts
Gusts reached 124km/h just after 11am in Hobart and 150km/h on the top of Mt Wellington.
The wind has forced the closure of lanes on the Tasman Bridge and all traffic is asked to avoid the bridge, especially trucks and buses.

Police are urging people to stay indoors to avoid flying debris.

Numerous trees have been blown down, with one hitting a house in Westerway.

The wind has caused havoc a major sporting venues in Hobart with reports of roofing iron blowing off a stadium at Bellerive Oval and major damage to the grandstand at the new grandstand at Elwick racecourse.

Power outages

Power lines have also been blown down, with Aurora crews responding to power outages across southern Tasmania.

Just over 17,000 customers are now without power. The suburbs affected are :
Trevallyn
Claremont
Austins Ferry
Northern Midlands
Tungatinah
North Hobart
New Norfolk
Geilston Bay
Bridgewater
Risdon Vale
Rokeby and
Kingston

In northern Tasmania, 2400 customers are without power in Lilydale and the Trevallyn region, including Riverside.

Customers are reminded that safety is a priority and are urged to stay clear of and report any fallen powerlines to Aurora’s Emergency Fault Line on 132 004.

Temperatures have soared ahead of a cold front which is crossing the state from the west.

A boat has run aground off South Bruny and police have reported businesses losing their roofs, sheds being blown on the road and other damage.

Police have also reported:

* A shed on the road on the Brooker Hwy, Claremont.

* Roof partly off at K&D, Hobart

* A pool on the road at Koraki St, Chigwell.

* A tree across Brinktop Rd, Richmond and a car has crashed into the tree.

* A Roof partly off Sewing Room in Criterion St.

The dust storm has hit Sorell, east of Hobart, slowing traffic. Both causeways leading to Sorell are hazardous in the high winds.
