We went to Strahan again 2 weeks ago and the whale carcasses were gone (washed away by the rough waves). Anyway, Ocean Beach is still a beautiful place to visit. We camped at the Macquarie Heads Camping Ground (as we were travelling with our dogs). Website: http://www.discovertasmania.com/ ... eheadscampingground. If you have a tent and warm sleeping bags, it is not a bad overnight option. Cost is only $6 per vehicle per night. There are public toilets (no shower facilities) and you have to bring your own drinking water.
A good website to look for accommodation is: http://www.wotif.com/. It offers last minute bargains from time to time.
After Strahan, go to the Cradle Mountain (about 2 hours drive). At the Cradle Mountain, do the Marion Lookout walk (I find the Dove Lake loop walk a bit boring) but you need to have a pair of good sturdy walking boots as the walk is quite hard as it approaches to top. Allow yourself 3 hours for the walk. If you haven't time for long walks, at least walk to the Boat House on Dove Lake. Follow the signs to the Marion Lookout, it is an about 15 min walk from the carpark. There is a nice short walk: Enchanted Walk (around the Visitor Centre). From Cradle, drive to Sheffield (an hour's drive). Sheffield is the Town of Murals. Look for the mural "The Missed Opportunity" outside the Slaters General Store and Eason Chan's mural in the Mural Park. About 15 min drive from Sheffield is Raiton, the Town of Topiary. It is a nice detour to make on your way from Sheffield to Elizabeth Town. Visit the Ashgrove Cheese Farm at Elizabeth Town (173 Bass Highway, Elizabeth Town). They offer free cheese tasting and a fairly educational video on cheese making. I love their wasabi cheese.
Then drive to Deloraine. On your way there, you will see the Christmas Hill Raspberry Farm (http://www.raspberryfarmcafe.com/) on the left of the highway. This is one of my favourite restaurants in Tasmania.
Deloraine is a nice little town and the river bank there is scenic. From Deloraine, drive to Liffey Falls. The forest and Big Tree walks there takes about 1.5 hours. The Liffey Falls are the most scenic water falls in Tasmania, in my opinion.
From Liffey Falls, drive to Launceston. Places to see in Launceston include the Cataract Gorge, Seaport, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (http://www.qvmag.tas.gov.au/). Places to see around Launceston include the Tamar Island Wetlands (http://www.tamarvalley.com.au/tamar_island_wetlands.htm), and the Tamar River wine valley tour.
From Launceston, drive to the East Coast via St Marys. From St Marys, take A4 (Elephant Pass Road) to Bicheno. En route is the Mt Elephant Pass Pancakes parlour (http://www.mountelephantpancakes.com.au/). I think they offer the best pancakes in the world.
If you get to Bicheno just before dark, join a Penguin tour there and get close to the fairy penguins.
If you are not interested in pancakes or penguins, drive directly from Launceston to Coles Bay via Campbell Town and Lake Leake which is a shorter route. Take a Wine Glass Bay walk in Coles Bay. If the walk is too difficult, you may drive to Honeymoon Bay and Sleepy Bay. These are rocky beaches. Then, drive to Cape Tourville for the Light House.
From Coles Bay, drive to Richmond via Swansea. 7.5km south of Swansea is the Spikey Bridge (http://www.think-tasmania.com/spiky-bridge/).
I suppose I do not have to cover Richmond or areas around Hobart such as the Tasman Peninsula or Brunny Island.
