Thank you for your email of 27 May 2011 to the department of Immigration and Citizenship about the new points test and qualifications.

Points are awarded for qualifications at Masters level where you have also completed a Bachelors degree recognised by the relevant assessing authority as being of comparable Australian standard.

In certain situations, where a person has not completed a Bachelors degree, however, an applicant is assessed by the relevant assessing authority as having qualifications comparable to an Australian Bachelors degree for the occupation they are being assessed for, may be eligible to claim points for a bachelors degree in the new points test.

Where a person gains a positive skills assessment from a relevant assessing authority but is not assessed as having a qualification comparable to at least an Australian Bachelors degree, they will still be eligible to claim 10 points in the new points test for their recognised qualifications.

Generally, you will be able to request an opinion on your qualification claims from the relevant assessing authority when you seek your skills assessment.
