Power cuts, floods hit state

HEAVY rain is causing flooding and has cut power to more than 1000 homes in Tasmania.
Up to 120 millimetres has fallen in some areas in the 24 hours to 9am today.
A range of road weather alerts have been activated across the state due to flooding.
Police said the Tasman Highway between St Helens and Orford is subject to spot flooding.
Glen Huon Rd, Huonville, also has a large amount of water an debris on it.
Police urge motorists to drive slowly and exercise caution when on these roads.
Aurora Energy says about 1000 customers have lost power on the Tasman Peninsula.
The rain is forecast to ease this afternoon.
Tasmania was already saturated after one of the wettest winters on record.
The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a return to dry weather, with the El Nino phenomenon expected to bring a hot and dry spring to the state. |
