现在，男女平等的思想越来越深入人心，但是为什么要强调男女平等？到底怎么才算男女平等？到底西方人对这个问题是怎么看的？

从历史角度来说，在很多文化中，女性都曾经被视作是比男性社会地位低的存在，甚至被视作是男性的附属品。比如在古希腊，女性是男性家庭成员的财产。圣经中，夏娃是由亚当的肋骨做成的，而且导致人类原罪的也是经不住诱惑偷吃禁果的夏娃。在古代中国，女性在经济和政治方面都没有独立的地位，女性掌权往往被视为大逆不道。在现代的一些国家和地区，还有女性是附属品的观念。比如在某些文化中，女性的头发和脸只有自己的父亲、兄长和丈夫可以看到，如果别的男性看到，女性便会收到审判甚至是严厉的惩罚。

随着社会的发展，在社会上很多地区都出现过女权运动，为女性争取社会和政治地位上的平等。例如，“In the wider society, the movement towards gender equality, especially in Western countries, began with the suffragette movement of the late-19th century, which sought to allow women to vote and hold elected office.” 之后越来越多的运动和思想变化，渐渐的给女性的生活带来了翻天覆地的变化。当然，男女平等这个概念依然是被大家关注的，因为尽管这个变化在发生，但在世界上有些地方还需要大家更多的努力。工作中女性收到歧视或区别对待也是常有的事，”glass ceiling” 这个词组，专门指代这样的状况。根据维基百科的解释：A glass ceiling is a political term used to describe "the unseen, yet unbreachable barrier that keeps minorities and women from rising to the upper rungs of the corporate ladder, regardless of their qualifications or achievements." （版权 Sun & Lexie School 所有）

那到底怎么才算男女平等了呢？先大家介绍一个概念，”Gender equality, also known as sex equality, sexual equality or equality of the genders, refers to the view that men and women should receive equal treatment, and should not be discriminated against based on gender, unless there is a sound biological reason for different treatment.” 那也就是说，男女平等也不是一味的强调全部统一，而是在某些情况下，可以允许差别的对待。当然，这只是一种看法，考生们可以根据自己的经验有自己的想法。但是要注意一点，不要太偏激。客观、冷静才是学术文章应该有的范儿！

Therefore, there is no reason to assume that women cannot perform equally as good as their male counterparts.
