POLICE are ramping up the search for missing student Zhanu "Tina" Yu amid concerns of foul play.
Detective Sergeant John Gilbert again appealed to the public for information after 12 calls received by Crime Stoppers failed to trace the 26-year-old's whereabouts.

At least six detectives from Hobart CIB and several uniform officers were involved in yesterday's statewide search efforts.

"We are quite concerned, a number of people are quite concerned, and that does escalate as time passes and we find more dead ends," Det Sgt Gilbert said.

"We followed a number of lines of inquiry but failed to make much ground.

"There is nothing to indicate foul play but at this stage we also can't rule it out because we just don't know."

Ms Yu's female housemate, also from China, last saw her on Thursday morning. She contacted police on Friday after Ms Yu failed to return home.

Det Sgt Gilbert said police believed Ms Yu, a University of Tasmania student on a student visa, was still in Tasmania.

"There is no evidence that she has left the state and we believe she is still here," he said.

"But we're not getting anywhere and we are concerned and we will be ramping up our investigations.

"Sometimes these things do take time but we won't give up, it's all part of the job."

The Chinese Embassy has been notified of Ms Yu's disappearance, but it is believed her family has not yet been informed.

Ms Yu was last seen wearing a black glittery knee-length sleeveless dress on Sandy Bay Rd or Harrington St about 2am on Thursday.

She is described as about 155cm tall, with long dark hair, brown eyes and of Chinese nationality.

Det-Sgt Gilbert said Ms Yu could speak English and was regarded as a good student and a pleasant person.

He urged the public to contact police with any information.

He also called for Ms Yu to contact authorities if possible.

"She hasn't done anything wrong, but we do need to know that she is safe," he said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Hobart Police Headquarters on 6230 2111.
