I don't think any body will get Free GST shopping including retired soldiers.  Part time soldiers will not get much extra benefits, the only benefit I can think of is that our wages is tax free.  However, after 8 years service in the Army reserve and 4 years service in the full time army, you will get much cheaper home loan.  
You can serve many years as you want in the army reserve, I am in my 7th year of service.  I am planning to stay in it long as I can.

I have never ever experienced any different treatment by the locals.  It might be the case 20-30 years ago, it is sure not the case now days.  Everybody are equal and there are some Chinese who are in both the OR, NCO and Officer's rank.  Everyone are equal.

Part time Army is an important part in Australia's defence.  Many part time soldiers are serving in different operations such as Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and Solomon Island.  Every person in my sub unit (apart from me) have served on operations.  From my experience, Australian Army is quite different to US army.
