Two charged with murderLINDA SMITH and SALLY GLAETZER

June 30, 2009 12:45pm

Update 3pm: TWO people have been charged with the murder of student Zhang "Tina" Yu, whose body was found dumped in a river.

Stavros Papadopoulos, 21, of New Town and Daniel Joseph Williams, 21, of Kingston, have been charged with murdering Ms Yu, a 26-year-old international student at the University of Tasmania,  last Thursday.

The men appeared separately in the Hobart Magistrates Court this morning.
Mr Papadopoulos appeared to have a black eye and was unshaven.

When asked if they understood the charge the men nodded.

They were not asked to enter a plea and they were remanded in custody and ordered to return to court on July 24.

The men were represented by lawyers.

The body of Ms Yu was found in the Tyenna River, off a track which runs off Gordon River Rd, in the Mt Field National Park area, 60km west of Hobart.

She was last seen walking in Hobart about 2am on Thursday. She was wearing a black, glittery knee-length sleeveless dress.

Ms Yu was studying in Hobart on a student visa.

Her disappearance was reported to the Chinese Embassy but it is not known whether her family in China have been notified of her death.
Jazmin Iris Haygarth, 18, and John Edward Mollineaux, 43, have been charged with failing to report the killing of Ms Yu.

According to court documents, Ms Haygarth lives with Mr Papadopoulos in a unit on New Town Rd, while Mr Mollineaux is their neighbour.

The two appeared in court briefly at midday and were remanded in custody until 2.15pm today.

Tasmanian politicians have express their horror at the killing of the Chinese student.

Liberal MP Rene Hidding said all members of the House of Assembly sent their condolences to the 26-year-old's family in China and her "education" family at the University of Tasmania.

The University of Tasmania has more than 2000 international students from 70 different countries.

"To the 2000 international students at the University of Tasmania we want to express to them, and I know I would be supported by all members of this House, that they are very highly regarded members in our society and they bring a cross cultural richness to our community here in Tasmania," Mr Hidding said.

"It is very important that we send a strong message to every student and their families that despite this awful news, we remain resolutely a safe destination for students.

"Nothing horrifies me more than a safe and loving community like Tasmania may in some way be viewed any other way."

Mr Hidding and Premier David Bartlett agreed to make contact with the University's international student support service and arrange for groups to visit Parliament House and join politicians for lunch on a regular basis.

"We need them to know rock solid in their minds that we as a Parliament are absolutely committed to making Tasmania a safe place for them to be."
