Seat belt fines hit $300

FINES for not wearing seat belts will rocket nearly 200 per cent as the Government gets tough on drivers.

The Sunday Tasmanian can reveal that from October, a driver will be fined $300 -- up from $110 -- for not wearing their seat belt.
Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges says the penalty system shake-up was instigated after revelations that 35 per cent of the people who died on Tasmanian roads last year were not wearing seat belts.

It also comes as the state's road toll this year has soared to 34, one of the highest five-month periods in the past decade.

Several people who have died on the state's roads this year were not wearing seat belts.

The new penalties will be:

Driver without a seat belt -- an increase from $110 to $300.

Passenger over 16 without seat belt (passenger fined) -- up from $110 to $300.

Passenger under 16 (driver fined) -- from $110 to $350.

The new penalties will bring Tasmania into line with the average penalties applied in other Australian states and territories.

The changes were recommended after a recent review by the Tasmanian Road Safety Council, the State Government's peak road-safety policy advisory body.

Mr Sturges, who approved the tougher penalties, said the council's review was in response to recent statistics showing an increase in the number of people involved in fatal crashes who were not wearing a seat belt.

"Thirty-five per cent of people who were involved in fatality crashes in 2008 were not wearing their seat belts. This is an alarming statistic," Mr Sturges said.

"These new penalties will make the community think twice about driving without a seat belt and will help reinforce the message that seat belts significantly reduce the risk of death and injury in the event of a crash."

Mr Sturges said a higher penalty for not securing children with seat belts reflected the push for increased responsibility from drivers.

He said it had been recommended the current, three-point demerit point penalty should be retained, because it was in line with most other states.

About 7000 infringement notices are issued to Tasmanian drivers each year for not wearing their seat belts.

Statistics for self-reported driver behaviour show 9 per cent of Tasmanians admit to driving without a seat belt -- down significantly from 15 per cent in 2003-04.
