While many luxury German brands rely on in-house tuners to create the more potent variants in their model line-up, Porsche has usually preferred to take matters into its own hands.
Although when it comes to style, it calls upon the talents and expertise of the Porsche Design Studio, as with its latest model - the Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3.
Usually more familiar with designing luxury Porsche-branded items such as watches and luggage, the new Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3 features styling cues that underline the V8-powered, high-performance personality of this SUV.
Immediately obvious is the choice of an exclusive Lava Grey Metallic exterior finish complimented by design stripes along the side and on the bonnet, with 21-inch SportPlus alloy wheels completing the look.
Its aggressive undertones are highlighted by bi-xenon headlights and dark privacy glazing to the rear of the B-pillar, and the ‘Cayenne GTS’ model designation in black with a red “S” at the rear.
Inside, the exclusive treatment continues with black leather upholstery throughout, with red contrasting seams on the instrument panel and doors.
The sports seats are electronically adjustable with the front headrests boasting an embossed Porsche logo and the centre seat sections front and rear are finished in Alcantara.
This material is also used on parts of the centre console and door trims as well as the complete roof lining, while carbon trim provides a subtle reference to motor sport.
The Porsche Design Studio believes the sound experience is separated into two parts: the first being the standard Bose 5.1 Surround Sound System with no less than 14 loudspeakers and overall output of 410W, and the latter being a sports exhaust system which comes to life at the touch of a button.
This purposeful exhaust note bellows from the 4.8-litre V8 engine which develops 302kW mated to a six-speed Tiptronic S transmission - resulting performance figures of zero to 100km/h in just 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 251km/h.
Each Porsche Design Edition is supplied with unique accessories and the Cayenne GTS Porsche Design Edition 3 is no exception.
Customers will receive a Type P’6612 automatic chronograph featuring a light titanium casing, further enhanced by a metal strap with diamond-like carbon coating which finds its origins in race engines.
They will also be given a four-piece luggage set bearing the ‘Porsche Design Edition 3’ label, no doubt resulting in some serious bragging rights at any airport terminal.
The new model will be limited to just 1,000 individually numbered units worldwide, available through special customer order from May - although Australian availability is yet to be confirmed.
