May 16, 2009 04:00am THE Cradle Mountain Lodge has been sold by the GPT Group for $21 million.
The buyer is believed to be Queensland businessman Michael McFie, who bought the luxurious Treetops Resort at Port Douglas in December last year.
The lodge will change hands on June 30.
Voyages Hotels and Resorts, which is owned by the GPT Group, bought the Cradle Mountain Lodge from P&O Resorts as part of a $210 million sale in 2004 along with resorts at Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef.
The listed property group GPT Ltd ran into trouble recently because of the global credit crisis and has sold two other properties in Queensland.
It is reportedly considering the sale of up to $1.4 billion in other shopping and tourism assets.
Cradle Mountain Lodge was one of the first major developments undertaken by Tasmanian tourism developer Simon Currant.
It comprises 86 guest cabins across four accommodation styles and last year was ranked fourth in the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller awards.
